This lecture presents the motivation for the study of logical reasoning systems in the support of AI and intelligent behavior. We will view this course as a "tonic" to the surfeit of purely statistical techniques in the field. This class will cover the basic systems of classical logic, including propositional, first order, modal propostional, and linear temporal logic. This will be followed by a quick treatment of linear logic and dynamic logic. The remainder of the course will focus on representation formalisms making use of these logical systems, in one way or another. We focus primarily on feature structure systems, as used in web ontologies and computational semantics.
