ATLANTA, July 27 (Xinhua) -- An International Olympic Committee (IOC) official vowed that the ongoing Olympics "will go on" despite an earlier explosion that killed at least two people.

"The Games will go on," Francois Carrard, Director General of IOC, told an early morning press conference called for in responding to the bombing at 1:30 a.m. local time (530 GMT).

"Although profoundly shocked by the incident, the IOC and the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games remain firm in the conviction that the ... Games will continue as planned," he said.

In addition, according to the official, the IOC and the Atlanta Committee have come up with two other decisions:

-- Participants of the games will observe a moment of silence later in the day in memory of the bombing victims;

-- Olympic flags at all venue sites will be lowered to half mast for the duration of the games.

The press conference, began at 5:15 a.m. and ended less than 15 minutes later, was held at the Olympic media center two blocks from the Centennial Olympic Park, where the explosion took place.

The blast in the downtown Atlanta killed 2 persons and injured 110 others.
