Using Google Earth: GIS for the Rest of Us

Google Earth is 3D geo browsing software that has become immensely popular. Hundreds of millions of users worldwide use this free product to browse satellite images of locations around the planet. Yet, many of Google Earth's features and applications remain unknown to it's large user base. Organizations as diverse as National Geographic, Prudential Realty, the National Park Service, and National Weather Service and others have implemented layers of customized data that allow Google Earth users to reference geo-related information in a simple, intuitive interface. We will examine these implementations and the technology that makes it all possible.

Bio: John J. Gardiner, Brandeis Class of 95 works for Google on the Google Earth team as a technical writer. He is author of the Google Earth user guide, "Using Google Earth" blog and other related documentation. He has worked with Microsoft, Adobe, Sun Microsystems and National Geographic on consumer and professional software and services for over ten years.
