Configuring Windows 95 PPP for Brandeis Computer Science Connections -- Text Only Version

Instructions for Setting Up PPP (Point to Point Protocol) in Windows 95.


Note: This version of the instructions for configuring PPP in Windows 95 is text only.


Note: If you’d like a hard copy of these instructions, click on File in the upper left hand corner of your screen. Then click on Print. Click on Ok.


Setting up PPP is a four step process:

  1. Setting up the Dial-up Adapter (if not already installed)
  2. Setting up TCP/IP Protocol (if not already installed)
  3. Configuring TCP/IP for Brandeis
  4. Setting your Brandeis Dial-In Connection

To begin, single click on the “Start Button” button in the lower left corner.

Go to Settings Panel, then single click on Control Panel.

Double click on Network.

In the list of Installed Network Components, make sure both Dial-up Adapter and TCP/IP are listed.

1. Setting up the Dial-up Adapter (if not listed)

If the Dial-up Adapter is not listed:

  1. single click on “Add Button”
  2. select Adapter, click on “Add Button”
  3. select Microsoft from the Manufacturer
  4. select Dial-up Adapter and click “Ok Button”.

2. Setting up TCP/IP Protocol (if not listed)

If TCP/IP is not listed:

  1. single click on “Add Button”
  2. select Protocol
  3. click on “Add Button”
  4. select Microsoft from the list of Manufacturers
  5. select TCP/IP, and click “Ok Button”.

3. Configuring TCP/IP for Brandeis Computer Science

  1. Select TCP/IP from the list of installed network components, and click on “Properties Button”.
  2. Click on IP Address. Select Obtain an address automatically.
  3. Click on DNS Configuration. Select Enable DNS. In the DNS server search order, type:
  4. 129.64.2.5
  5. Click on Add.

Now click Ok.

Click Ok on the Network Window to finish Adapter Protocol setup. Windows may ask for Windows 95 disks or CD-ROM. It may ask for a Host Name – if so, enter PPP. And it may ask to restart Windows 95.

4. Setting your Brandeis Computer Science Dial-In Connection

When you are back in Windows 95 after restarting, click on Start, then Programs, then Accessories. Click on Dial-up Networking.


  1. Note: If you do not see Dial-up Networking in the Accessories list, you will have to reinstall (or install) the Dial-up Networking software by using the following procedure detailed in steps 1-15. This procedure is only necessary if you do not see Dial-Up Networking in Accessories. Otherwise, skip steps 1-15.
  2. To begin, single click on Start Button in the in the lower left corner.
  3. Go to Settings Panel, then single click on Control Panel.
  4. Click on Add/Remove Programs.
  5. Click on Windows Setup (the middle of three tabs towards the top of the screen). Wait for a few seconds until the screen changes.
  6. Make sure the check box in front of Communications is checked. If it is not, use your mouse to make the check mark appear.
  7. Then click OK and the communications software will be installed.
  8. You will have to insert your Windows 95 installation disks or CD-ROM to install Dial-Up Networking.
  9. If the check mark in front of Communications WAS checked already, click on the Details button, and make sure there is a check mark in front of Dial-Up Networking.
  10. If it is not, use your mouse to check it, and then hit OK on the Communications Window, then OK on the Add/Remove Programs Properties Window.
  11. Again, Windows 95 will ask you to insert your installation disks in order to install the Dial-up Networking Software. If both items were checked, it’s a Windows problem and you’ll need to call Microsoft Support. —–
  12. Now click on,
  13. then Programs Button,
  14. then Microsoft Accessories Button.
  15. Click on Microsoft Dial-up Networking Button.

Double click on Make New Connection.

Type Computer Science in the Computer Name field (default is My Connection).

Note: If your modem is not listed in the Make New Connection window, click on Start, Settings, and Control Panel. Click on Add New Hardware, and follow the prompts to a dd your modem.

Click Next.

In the phone number field, Add 781-736-2730 to the phone number field.

Click on Next.

Click on Finish to finish setting up the Connection.

An icon will appear in the Dial-up Networking folder named Computer Science.

  1. Single click Computer Science, click the right mouse button and click Properties.
  2. Click on Configure button.
  3. Click on Options and put a check mark on Bring up terminal window after dialing.
  4. Click Ok.
  5. Click on Server type, and make sure PPP:Windows 95, Windows NT 3.5, Internet is selected in the Type of Dial-up Server and make sure there is a check mark on TCP/IP in the Allowed Network Protocol.

Click Ok, then click Ok one more time on the Computer Science window.


Now you are ready to dial and connect to Computer Science.


Double click on the Computer Science icon in the Dial-up Networking folder to dial and connect.

It will bring up a Connect to Computer Science Window, with 781-736-2730 in the phone number field.

  1. Click on Connect to dial the number.
  2. Once connected you will see the Annex Screen and a Username prompt.
  3. Type your userid or netid, then press enter.
  4. Type the password for your userid or netid, and press enter.
  5. If your userid and password are valid, you will see the “annex #“ Prompt. If so, type PPP at that Prompt, hit return, and click on Continue.
  6. When Computer Science dialer verifies the connection, the Connecting to Computer Science Window will change to a Connected to Computer Science Window. The Disconnect button will also appear which can be used to end your connection when you are finished running your applications.

Now you can run Winsock (TCP/IP) applications like Netscape, Eudora, TN3270, etc.

NOTE: if you completed all the steps above, connected, but still having problems with running TCP/IP applications - your problem might be caused by some software installation (such as PC-FNS kit) that modified your Winsock. To fix that you should go to this site.

You may want to minimize the Connected to Computer Science Window.

When you are done surfing the net, and want to disconnect, go to the Connected to Computer Science window again and click on Disconnect.
